Some of the challenges with this particular project included

Reliability – The machine is located on a remote site and due to it being a prototype there was limited site support available from site operations. Any breakdowns could lead to long periods of downtime as well as high servicing costs due to the remote location. VES designed a system with minimal sensing requirements therefore keeping it as simple as possible and specified equipment fit for operating in the demanding mining environment. The control system provided also allowed remote management and including complete system and process data logging. This allowed the control system to be supported remotely and any events to be analysed later to determine the source of any errors critical for any sampling verification. The electrical and control systems proved to be very reliable over an extended duration.

Flexibility – As the machine was a prototype system it needed to be as flexible as possible to allow any future possible design changes. The control system design used position control providing high accuracy whilst also allowing easy modification therefore not relying on physically changing any sensor positions.

Project duration – The complete project was required to be delivered over a 6 month period which given the difficulties of being a unique prototype machine for a remote mining site was quite challenging. VES provided the resources to deliver the project on time whilst maintaining their high level of quality throughout.

Safety – As well as safety during the construction and delivery of the system the machine should allow operation to be as safe as possible and meet all client and Australian/NZ safety standards. For VES, safety is of the highest priority. Designers have the responsibility to address the most important levels of the hazard control hierarchy. By eliminating or substituting possible hazards during the design phase the safest possible system can be provided. VES worked with the client project team and mechanical engineers to design the system with this in mind. VES also lead a safety assessment of the system to Australian/NZ standard AS4024 (Safety of Machinery) and designed and built a system compliant with the required safety category.
